BACKGROUND
The Assault Pod was in the spirit of the previous modifications Regult modifications. The basic Regult body type was left unchanged, adhering to the standard Zentraedi design of cheaply produced lightly armored mecha. The only change was the addition of a PB-19b particle beam cannon, that was in the development stage to replace the standard PB-19 found on the Glaug Officer Battle Pod. This new cannon had a increased rate of fire over the standard model at the cost of a slightly decreased range (see PB-19b weapon description below). With the addition of the PB-19b, the Assault Pod could fire upon enemy mecha at much longer ranges than before and would be able to destroy large groups of Invid before the Assault Pod came within plasma disk range. The Robotech Masters hoped that this new design would slowly replace the standard Regult at the primary frontline unit and thus help them regain the advantage over the incoming Invid hordes. Only 1,000 Regult-Assaults were ever produced. The mecha performed admirably, however, with the masters power waning and the protoculture supplies dwindling, the cost of production and retooling the Robotech factories began prohibitive. The most famous encounter with Assault Pods occurred in March 2010 at the RDF Weapons and Research Base Gibraltar located in the asteroid belt. The Zentraedi Major Calen led his special forces team against the base which included approximately 50 Regult-Assaults. Although the base was destroyed at the end of the fight, the entire Zentraedi force (including Major Calen) was eliminated. However, the Assault Scout proved its worth destroying large numbers of the automated ghost fighters. |
